Aurelien Michel, the creator of the Mutant Ape Planet NFT collection, was arrested in January 2023 and ultimately pled guilty to wire fraud conspiracy in a federal court in New York. He has agreed to pay $1.4 million in restitution and faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison. The Mutant Ape Planet collection has subsequently been removed from the OpenSea platform over copyright issues.
