SHEFFIELD UNITED

DESCRIPTION OF EVENTS

Sheffield United Football Club, nicknamed "The Blades", is a historic professional football club based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Founded in 1889, the club plays its home matches at Bramall Lane, one of the oldest stadiums in the world still hosting professional football. The nickname “Blades” reflects Sheffield’s long-standing association with the steel and cutlery industry. The club is currently competing in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football, under the management of Chris Wilder.

Sheffield United has a proud and varied history. The club was crowned English champions in 1897–98 and has won the FA Cup four times (1899, 1902, 1915, and 1925). Over the decades, United has experienced highs and lows, including extended periods in both the top and lower tiers of English football. Notably, they are one of only five clubs to have won all four professional divisions of English football. They were also founding members of the Premier League in 1992 and scored the league’s first ever goal.

In recent years, the club has bounced between the Championship and the Premier League. After a return to the top flight in the 2022–23 season, they were relegated again the following year. The club maintains a strong fan base and continues to build through its men’s and women’s teams, academy, and community initiatives. Off the pitch, Sheffield United runs a dedicated streaming service (SUTV) and operates an online shop, offering merchandise like home and away kits, training gear, and travel wear. Their intense rivalry with Sheffield Wednesday in the Steel City derby remains one of the fiercest in English football.

Sheffield United's account was hacked.

The attackers reportedly posting promotional tweets featuring a Meme coin contract address for a $SUFC token on the Solana blockchain. The token reportedly achieved a market cap of $900k at it's peak.

Following the token launch, the hackers then posted a series of bizarre and erratic tweets focused largely on Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan. These tweets ranged from contradictory statements expressing both love and confusion about Bannan, to a sudden change of topic praising Manchester United over Manchester City. The unusual nature of these posts quickly raised suspicions among supporters, and the tweets were deleted within an hour.

The token reportedly achieved a market cap of $900k at it's peak. However, the full losses have not yet been determined.

Sheffield United posted on Facebook to warn fans that their official X account had been temporarily hacked. They clarified that any posts, messages, or interactions from the compromised account were not authorized by the club and promised to keep supporters informed about when they regain full control.

In a follow up statement, Sheffield United said they had regained control of the account and removed all the unauthorized posts. They apologized to anyone offended by the content, clarifying that the hacked messages did not reflect the club’s views.

After the incident, the club resumed normal social media activity, posting a light-hearted message and a supportive video from former defender Jack O’Connell ahead of the play-off final.

It is unclear who is behind the hack.
