Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, born on July 10, 1925, in Alor Setar, Kedah, is a prominent Malaysian politician, author, and physician. He served as the 4th and 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia, with his first tenure spanning from 1981 to 2003, and his second from 2018 to 2020. Mahathir is the longest-serving prime minister in Malaysia's history, holding office for a total of 24 years. He played a crucial role in transforming Malaysia's economy, infrastructure, and global standing, earning the title "Father of Modernisation."

Before entering politics, Mahathir was a trained physician, graduating from the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore in 1953. His political career began in 1964 when he was elected as a Member of Parliament. He rose through the ranks of UMNO, serving in several cabinet roles, including Minister of Education, Deputy Prime Minister, and eventually Prime Minister in 1981. His tenure saw significant modernization efforts, including industry privatization and ambitious infrastructure projects.

During his first term, Mahathir also centralized political power and undertook controversial actions such as undermining judicial independence. He faced challenges like the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the arrest of his deputy, Anwar Ibrahim, in 1998. After stepping down in 2003, Mahathir remained influential, becoming a vocal critic of his successors and later re-entering politics in 2017, where he led the opposition coalition to a historic victory in 2018. However, his second term was marked by political instability, and he resigned in 2020.

Mahathir's views, shaped by Malay nationalism and Islamic values, have evolved over the years. His legacy remains influential in Malaysia, despite controversies surrounding his leadership style and decisions.
